The Myth of the “Everyday” Angler

“Man, you’re lucky. You get to fish whenever you want.”

I hear this constantly. People assume my life is one long vacation on the water. That is far from the truth. And honestly, I used to get pissed off when I heard it. Even as a kid, I would get genuinely upset when I couldn’t go fishing. It wasn’t just disappointment; it was anger.

The Northern Grey and The Mask

I suffered from seasonal depression when I lived and worked up north. The lack of sun, the grey skies, the cold—it was a real thing. I was one of those people who just didn’t function well without the light.

I didn’t deal with it well. I turned to long, extended happy hours and food to mask the depression. If I couldn’t be on the water, I was going to numb the frustration or try to force the outdoor lifestyle however I could.

The Smoker Incident

I remember one specific Friday night that sums up that time perfectly. I had this obsession with wanting to learn how to smoke fish. The problem was, I was living in an apartment complex in the middle of winter.

That didn’t stop me. I dragged a smoker out onto the patio. On the way home from work, I had picked up a 12-pack of Old Style.  I remember being so happy when they brought back the original label on the can—it just looked the way it was supposed to look. I caught a good buzz, fired up the smoker, put the meat on, and settled in.

But let’s be real about the taste. I shoved that 12-pack right into the snow outside so it would get ice cold. That was the trick—you had to get it freezing to kill that initial Old Style taste.

Next thing I knew, I was waking up to pounding on the door. I had fallen asleep in the chair. Sure enough, the smoker had filled the sky with smoke, and the fire department showed up thinking the whole apartment complex was on fire.

That was good night.

The Pimp and Strip Bar

That intensity carried over to the fishing, too. I fished rivers right inside the city limits of suburban Chicago after college. That time was fun. Even if there weren’t many fish caught some nights, it cleared the brain. And man, I met some characters along those banks. Some were cool people. Others… well, looking back, maybe I shouldn’t have said hello.

I remember one time I started talking to a guy who turned out to be a pimp. One thing led to another, and we ended up at a strip club. But here’s the kicker—we sat there amidst the chaos and talked about catfishing.

I’m dead serious. We were discussing bottom rigs and bait while happy hour blurred into the evening. When I realized how deep the night was getting, I decided it was time to go. I pulled a classic “Irish Goodbye”—just ghosted out the back door without saying a word.

The Fight on the Dam

It wasn’t pretty, scenic fishing back then. It was a grind.

I remember getting into a fight on a dam over a crappie spot. It got ugly. The police were actually called. Looking back, it was three against one—which is not exactly odds you want to take on.

But in my brain? I won that fight.

Now, I definitely paid the price for it—you don’t walk away from 3-on-1 without a few reminders—but I won because I was not going to get bumped out of my spot that night. They were biting, and I wasn’t moving. I took that mess of fish home and filleted them right there in the apartment sink. It wasn’t glorious, but it was real.

No More Guilt

I used to feel guilty about all these stories. For a long time, I was afraid to tell them because I worried about what people might think of me. I thought it might look bad for a business owner to talk about fires, fights, and strip clubs.

But here I am today. I look back on all of it—the smoke, the Old Style, the grind—and man, did I have some good times. I met a lot of crazy people, and I learned how to survive. It wasn’t always pretty, but it was my life. Now that I’m done hiding that part of my past, I will be sharing a few more of these stories along the way.

Raised on Fishing Legends (Not Influencers)

That is probably why I struggle to connect with the modern style of content. The screaming at the fish, the cinematic drone shots, the slow-motion promos—it’s great entertainment for some, but for me, it feels like a distraction.

I realized it’s not my age. It’s my pedigree.

I grew up going to boat show seminars with my dad. We didn’t go for the flash; we went to watch Dan Gapen, the Catfish legend.

I actually remember saving up my own money just to buy his orange Bait Walker at one of those shows. That thing was a game-changer. I caught so many catfish on that rig in the messy rocks where nothing else would work. In fact, that design stuck with me so much that years later, I created the “GKS Mutton Crusher” based on Dan Gapen’s Bait Walker. It’s funny how things come full circle.

We sat there and learned. At home, I wasn’t watching hype videos; I was watching In-Fisherman with Al Lindner. That was about biology, patterns, and science.

And of course, Jose Wejebe. When Jose passed away, a huge part of the industry’s soul went with him. These guys didn’t need drone shots or fake enthusiasm. They had knowledge.

The Miami Boat Show Memory

When we finally moved down here and took our last dime to purchase The Good Karma to start our charter business, I thought the depression would vanish. But whenever the weather turned and I couldn’t fish, that old “up north” feeling crept back in.

I remember the first time I saw a real educational tool that gave me that same feeling I got from those old seminars. Melinda and I were at the Miami Boat Show years ago.

At that time, we were all in on the business. We could barely afford the gas just to drive to the show. We were walking the floor, feeling the pressure, when we stopped at a booth displaying Sea Surface Temperature (SST) charts.

The colors grabbed me immediately. Watching the screen, seeing the ocean move in heat maps and currents—it was awesome. It was like seeing the heartbeat of the ocean. I told myself right then: “One day, I’m going to be able to afford a service like this.”

The SatFish Routine

Flash forward to 2022. Fishing was tough, and life challenges were piling up. The struggle was back. I remembered that promise I made to myself at the boat show. I decided to purchase a trial of SatFish. I figured, what the hell do I have to lose?

Key Largo Fishing Charter

I became addicted—but this time, to something good.

On the days I wasn’t fishing, I realized I wasn’t getting pissed off at the world as much. I wasn’t looking for a happy hour, a 12-pack of Old Style, or a 3-on-1 fight on a dam. I started a new routine: SatFish and Coffee.

It’s not just a morning ritual, either. I find that when I can’t sleep at night, instead of staring at the ceiling, I pull up SatFish to see what the ocean is doing. The screenshots come in at all hours. I look at those bright colors, play the historical loops, and update my logbooks. I watch the loop currents. It’s fascinating learning how the water truly moves.

It helps me filter out the noise, too. I struggle with the fake interactions in this business. It gets under my skin when I see local South Florida Fishing channel YouTubers copying the content I work hard to create. That stuff wears on you, and it’s something I have to work on letting go of every single day.

That is where the charts help. When I’m looking at that screen, there are no fake handshakes and no copycats. It’s just the data.

The South Florida SatFish Intensive: 4-Week Masterclass

Stop Guessing. Start Hunting with Science.

Are you tired of burning fuel searching for the bite? Do you want to understand the why behind the where?

We are thrilled to announce an exclusive learning opportunity for the South Florida fishing community. The South Florida SatFish Intensive is a comprehensive 4-week masterclass designed to bridge the gap between high-level oceanography and your fish box.

This isn’t just another fishing seminar; it is a deep dive into the science of finding fish, led by the industry’s leading mind.

Meet Your Instructor: Dr. R. Jeffrey Barr, PhD

We are bringing in the heavy artillery for this intensive. Your guide for the next four weeks is none other than Dr. R. Jeffrey Barr, the Chief Scientist, Head of Product, and the driving force behind SatFish.

Why learn from Dr. Barr?

Jeff isn’t just a data analyst; he is a marine biologist with a PhD from the prestigious Joint Doctoral Program at UC Davis and San Diego State University.

His specialization is exactly what every angler needs to understand:

  • Oceanography & Bottom Structure: How the movement of water interacts with the ocean floor.
  • Predictive Modeling: Using data to predict exactly where fish populations will be.
  • Fisheries Management: Understanding population dynamics to target species effectively.

Jeff has spent his career building the tools that serious anglers rely on. Now, he’s here to teach you how to master them.

Who Is This Course For?

This intensive is designed for serious South Florida fishing anglers who are ready to elevate their game. Whether you are fishing for dinner or for a paycheck, understanding the science of the ocean is your biggest competitive advantage.

This course is open to:

  • Recreational Anglers: Weekend warriors looking to maximize their limited time on the water.
  • Freelance Fishing Guides: Guides who want to deliver consistent results for clients, regardless of conditions.
  • Charter Fishing Captains: Professionals who need to save fuel and find the bite faster than the competition.

What to Expect

Over the course of 4 weeks, Dr. Barr will deconstruct the SatFish platform and the science behind it. You will move beyond looking at pretty colors on a map and start understanding the dynamic relationship between:

  • Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and breaks.
  • Chlorophyll Charts and water clarity.
  • Altimetry and Currents to predict bait concentrations.
  • Bathymetry and how structure dictates fish behavior in South Florida waters.

The Goal: To give you the knowledge to look at a satellite shot and know exactly where to point the bow before you ever leave the dock.

Secure Your Spot

Classes like this, led by a scientist of Dr. Barr’s caliber, are rare. Space is limited to ensure a high-quality learning environment for all attendees.

Don’t let the bite pass you by. Join us for the South Florida SatFish Intensive and change the way you fish forever.

You Have to Be Ready

The resources are out there—whether it’s SatFish or other tools—but here is the hard truth: they won’t do you any good if you are still stuck in a place of hating. I know that for a fact.

You have to be ready yourself. You have to be ready for change.

I encourage those of you who are struggling deep down to find something that drives you. Dig deep and find that thing that flips the switch in your brain. And do yourself a favor: limit the time you spend watching “entertainment value” YouTube channels. Stop scrolling through the fake noise. Pick a couple of favorites that actually offer educational value and stick to those.

I’ve also found a lot of peace in just writing these blogs. Good, honest articles are hard to come by nowadays—everything is just a sales pitch or a highlight reel. Writing lets me slow down and actually teach. Here is a link to a blog I wrote a while back about how to use SatFish https://goodkarmasportfishing.com/sst-charts-explained-florida-keys-fishing/

That is where I’m at today. My style is teaching. That is what drives me now. When I am on the water, I give everything I got to my client that I can give that day. I don’t hold back secrets. I want you to learn what I learned—without having to fight three guys on a dam to get there.

Most of you guys get it. I am not the only one, I know that now. SatFish and coffee fills that missing void out there for me. The charts gave me that connection back.

As a proud affiliate of SatFish, I am excited to offer a discount. Simply enter the code good karma at checkout to receive $20.00 off your annual subscription.

And remember: Anytime you’re fishing, it’s all good. I truly mean that, and I have to remind myself of that every time I get a strange feeling or feel pissed off at the world.

Thanks for reading.

Capt. Ryan
