Mahi Mahi are an incredibly cool fish and to be totally honest with you, I am not a big fan of eating them myself—but I absolutely love to hunt them for my clients. Even though I’m not a fan of putting them on my own plate, my clients love to catch them not only for their delicious meat but also because these fish love to jump and  they put up a good fight when using a  spinning rod.

Mahi Mahi are famous for their awesome, iridescent blue, green, and gold colors, which fade almost immediately upon catching, so make sure to take that picture quickly.  Because they are incredibly fast-growing and prolific breeders, they remain a highly sustainable target when fished responsibly.

The long running  mahi mahi fishing captain joke is, navigating those “10 names” can feel like an identity crisis. Depending on who you are talking to at the cleaning table or where you travel around the globe, you’ll hear them called:

  • Mahi-Mahi: The Hawaiian name meaning “very strong,” which became the global marketing standard so restaurants could sell it without confusing people.
  • Dolphinfish (or Dolphin): The oldest English name, heavily used by charter captains and commercial guys from the Carolinas down through the Keys and the Gulf.

If you talk to the captains and recreational anglers  that have been targeting mahi mahi for over 10 years, they’ll tell you things started feeling different back around 2011 when all that nasty, rotting sargassum weed started messing up the ecosystem, changing fish feeding habits, and shifting migration timelines.

But according to hard data from NOAA and the Dolphinfish Research Program (DRP), 2019 was the official turning point. Between 2015 and 2020, recreational landings for mahi across the Southeast plummeted from around 3 million pounds down to just 1 million pounds.

Why? It’s a combination of two massive factors: water temperatures and an international commercial gauntlet.

Along with my SatFish and coffee morning routine, I now pull up the AIS and see what is happening with the commercial fishing boats. It is fun to watch the shrimp boats fishing off Key West in the Winter months using AIS. 

Today, there is absolutely no secret to where the commercial longline fisheries are. Anyone with an internet connection can pull up an AIS (Automatic Identification System) marine tracking program or an open-access satellite platform like Global Fishing Watch and watch the exact movements of industrial fleets on any given day.

 

How We Can See the Mahi Mahi Long Lines Are Being Set

AIS was originally designed as a safety and collision-avoidance system for large ships. However, international maritime law requires large commercial fishing vessels—especially the massive high-seas pelagic longliners—to continuously broadcast their location, vessel identity, speed, and heading.

By feeding that raw AIS data into tracking software, advanced machine-learning algorithms can analyze a vessel’s behavior in real time to map out exactly what they are doing:

The Mahi Mahi Commercial Fishing  “Dark Fleet” 

While AIS brings a massive amount of transparency to the water, it also reveals the darker side of industrial mahi mahi  fishing. If a vessel is operating illegally, encroaching on a protected marine sanctuary, or attempting to hide its true catch volume, the captain will often pull the plug on the transponder—a tactic known as going “dark.” But even that doesn’t work anymore.

Modern satellite technology matches public AIS tracking with SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) and night-light imaging. Even if a foreign vessel turns off its tracking device to hide in the dark, radar satellites can still spot the physical metal hull of the ship reflecting on the water, mapping their exact coordinates anyway.

What water temp does Mahi Mahi prefer?

Mahi  love warm water, but only up to a point. When summer heatwaves push the Gulf Stream past 88°F, it physically robs the surface water of oxygen. It slows the fish down and forces them to either dive way down deep where you can’t troll for them, or skip the Keys entirely and head way up north to find comfortable water.

There is a precise moment out on the water I live for when I am fishing for mahi mahi off the Florida Keys: when the cloud cover burns off, the sky opens up, and the ocean shifts to that piercing, electric, bright-blue color.

Mahi are highly visual, light-activated hunters. They love that light change. When that sun intensity cracks open and the water turns to neon blue, it acts like an absolute dinner bell. They drop their guards, blast to the surface, and start looking for flyers.

But if you’ve noticed a severe lack of those massive, exploding schools of flying fish migration we used to glide past offshore, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. When those went away, the dolphin fishing declined.

While it’s easy to suspect that foreign fleets are out there actively netting flying fish off Africa to sell them, the true ecological story is a mix of industrial bycatch and a massive habitat shift caused by the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt:

  • The Industrial FAD Trap: Large distant-water foreign fleets (from nations like China and Taiwan) drop thousands of industrial floating FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices) off West Africa and across the Atlantic to attract tuna. Flying fish naturally swarm to these floating structures by the millions to shelter. When massive commercial nets scoop up the tuna, flying fish are destroyed and discarded by the ton as unrecorded commercial bycatch.
  • The Spawning Pull-Over: Flying fish are structurally dependent on floating seaweed to spawn—they physically wrap their sticky strings of eggs around sargassum fronds. Before 2011, when seaweed was sparse, flying fish had to travel the entire migration loop into the Caribbean and the Florida Straits to find weeds. Now that the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt forms a continuous, 5,000-mile mat across the equator, the flying fish are pulling over thousands of miles short. They stay parked in the mid-Atlantic and Caribbean, dropping commercial flying fish landings in places like Barbados by over 52%.

When the flying fish stopped completing their northern loop, the mahi migration patterns fractured. Mahi are opportunistic; they aren’t going to swim thousands of extra miles to the Florida Keys if their primary calorie source stays parked out in the open ocean.

I didn’t bring you guys to the blog just to give you bad news. A lot of you guys are very new to this offshore game and rely almost entirely on YouTube for your fishing information. Let me tell you something about those video creators: the people out there making content right now definitely are not in the thick of it day in and day out on the water, and they haven’t seen the raw changes first-hand. 

You need to know the actual history so you respect the resource, but this season is telling a completely different story. We are seeing incredible, undeniable signs on the water right now that point to a massive upward shift.

Right now, there is an absolute influx of bigger, healthy school-sized fish flooding our coastal highway. Even better, the Carolinas are completely lighting up with heavy-class fish again like they haven’t seen in years.

And if you want proof that the real monsters are successfully escaping the commercial nets and making it into our currents, look at what just happened right up the road off Jacksonville: an angler pitched a dead ballyhoo into a rip and boated a massive 67-pound bull mahi! When you start seeing 60-plus pound fish showing up on our coastline again, it means the migratory cycle is healthy, the bait is moving, and the mahi mahi are coming back.

Riding the Highway vs. Cruising the Coast: How the Gulf Stream Controls Dolphinfish Movements

If you’ve ever targeted dolphinfish (mahi-mahi) in the Florida, you know they can move incredibly fast. But did you know their northern commute depends almost entirely on where they hit the Gulf Stream?

The Dolphinfish Research Program recently shared some fascinating tagging data that reveals just how much of a game-changer this ocean current really is.

By tracking the westward wall of the Gulf Stream off the Florida Keys using data from the Naval Oceanographic Office, researchers noticed a massive speed discrepancy for tagged fish:

  • In the Fast Lane: Dolphinfish tagged, released, and recaptured inside the Gulf Stream averaged an impressive 35 miles per day.

  • In the Slow Lane: Fish tagged, released, and recaptured outside the influence of the Gulf Stream averaged just 14 miles per day.

Essentially, hitting that main current more than doubles their travel speed.

Getting Caught in the Eddies

It turns out dolphinfish aren’t always in a rush. Surface drifter analysis shows that when fish are outside the Gulf Stream’s pull, they often get caught up in nearshore eddies.

Data shows these fish frequently meander and loop around:

  • Along the Florida Keys

  • Near Cay Sal Bank

  • Through the Old Bahama Channel

  • Across the Northwest Providence Channel

In fact, some dolphinfish tagged in the Lower Keys have been observed traveling west toward Key West or circulating within the Keys for up to 19 days before moving on.

The Fall Mahi Mahi Return and Why Size Matters

The data also highlighted an interesting seasonal pattern. During the fall, dolphinfish have been recorded moving backinto Florida state waters after spending three to five months out at sea—likely after taking a scenic route through the Bahamas.

Why This Matters for Mahi Mahi Conservation

These local recirculation patterns are exactly why practicing conservation is so vital. By releasing smaller, immature fish that haven’t reached full sexual maturity, we allow them to stay in these local systems longer. This directly supports a larger spawning biomass and ensures a stronger, healthier fishery for future generations.

To catch these fish this season, you have to understand how they use the Gulf Stream. The DRP tracked the westward wall of the stream using Naval Oceanographic Office data and found a massive speed discrepancy:

  • In the Fast Lane (Inside the Stream): Mahi traveling inside the main body of the Gulf Stream blast north at an average of 35 miles per day.
  • In the Slow Lane (Outside the Stream): Fish outside the direct pull of the current slow down to squeeze a meal out of the local reefs, averaging just 14 miles per day.

When fish are in the slow lane, they get caught up in nearshore eddies—circular currents along the Keys reef tract, Cay Sal Bank, through the Old Bahama Channel, and across the Northwest Providence Channel. In fact, tracking shows some mahi tagged in the Lower Keys will hang out and circulate right here in the Keys for up to 19 days before moving on.

Why This Matters for Conservation: Because these fish linger in our local systems for a couple of weeks, we have to practice smart conservation. By releasing the tiny, sexually immature “schoolies,” we give them time to feed, grow, and support a larger spawning biomass so the fishery stays healthy.

The Best time to Fish for Mahi Mahi in the Florida Keys

Master the Moon: Why the New Moon is King for Big Mahi Mahi 

If there is one piece of advice that will completely transform you from a casual weekend warrior into an elite fisherman, it is this: Start timing your runs around the New Moon. If you want consistency, numbers, and the absolute biggest fish of the month, the three days leading up to the new moon and the three days after are your golden window. 

The science of fishing for Mahi Mahi in the Florida Keys. I have been actively studying the migration of mahi mahi for over 10 years.  In 2023 I started seeing  more larger fish caught in the Florida Keys during the new moons than years past. On the new moon in July, I used my data to go dolphin fishing and look for larger dolphin. Clients caught 20 mahi mahi and one large slammer bull dolphin within 3 hours of fishing. We did not find any debris, just migrating fish along 1 degree change in temperature break (85  F to 86 F).  I use SATFISH to find the offshore temperatures breaks. Mahi-mahi are visual apex predators. During a bright full moon, the ocean is lit up like a stadium. Mahi can see perfectly, meaning they gorge themselves on flying fish, squid, and baitfish all night long. When you pull up at 9:00 AM on a full moon to troll, those fish are completely stuffed and lazy. They have a “lockjaw hangover.”

On a New Moon, the night is pitch black. Mahi cannot hunt effectively in absolute darkness. They spend all night resting, meaning that when the sun cracks the horizon, they are completely starving and aggressively hunting. The daytime bite is exponentially more violent and consistent.

Mahi Mahi Spawning and Feeding Behavior

Recent satellite telemetry and marine biology tracking models have proven that mahi-mahi predominantly spawn during the low-light window of the new moon. They do this so their floating eggs are hidden from predators in the dark. Because they aggregate heavily to mate, the biggest bulls and cows are packed tightly together, and their protective, competitive instincts make them strike lures with pure aggression.

The gravitational pull during a new moon creates the strongest tidal shifts of the entire month (called spring tides). Harder moving water pushes baitfish off the reefs and locks them into tight bands along the current rips.

What do Mahi Mahi eat?

  • Ballyhoo: The gold standard. Rigged properly, its lifelike swimming action when trolled is completely irresistible.
  • Squid: Can be used live or cut. Its natural profile and motion in the water are a proven winner.
  • Spanish Sardines: Sardines and flying fish are two of the absolute best cut baits. The scent trail they leave is crucial when fish are finicky.
  • Pilchards: Excellent for both slow-trolling or creating a chunk-line to keep a school behind the boat.

The Case for Naked (Unskirted) Ballyhoo

A properly rigged, unskirted ballyhoo is a work of art.  It relies entirely on the natural swimming action of the bait to get picky and heavily pressured to eat. 

  • When to use it: Calm days, crystal-clear blue water, and when the fish are spooky or highly pressured. On a busy holiday weekend I go with an un-skirted ballyhoo. 
  • The Advantage: It has a subtle, realistic swimming action that a skirt can sometimes dampen. I have seen fish run away from seawitches as well as wahoo. 
  • In slick-calm water, skirted ballyhoo will actually scare a dolphin. A naked ballyhoo skipping gently across a glassy surface looks exactly like a lone, vulnerable flying fish.
  • The Downside: They wash out much faster. Without a hard plastic or metal head protecting the nose of the bait, the water pressure will eventually tear the mouth open, causing the bait to spin and ruin your presentation. So to make this work, you have to properly brine those baits and salt them.

The Case for Skirted Ballyhoo (The “Dressed” Bait)
